I’m a science kind of guy. I like math and chemistry and the Periodic Table and Newtonian mechanics. So naturally I know for a fact that there are four fundamental forces in physics: electromagnetism, strong nuclear interaction, weak nuclear interaction, and gravity. These are the forces that bind the universe. But what binds humans?
I was always the nerd with the pants that only met his ankles. Wire-frame glasses and poor social skills, New Balance sneakers and sweater vests. I may not have had popularity but I swear I had the best damn calculator a fifth grader could buy. I had crushes on the pretty girls at school but they would only use me for homework. I never played a sport but I did win gold at the Science Olympiad.
I never thought I could be dating, let alone call myself somebody’s boyfriend. That was never in my high school four year plan or in my college fund. If I had told my fifth grade self that I would be with someone like her, my fifth grade self would have popped a boner and drooled over her picture for hours. No lie I almost did the same exact thing when I saw her for the first time on (embarrassingly enough) Tumblr. She was that dropdead gorgeous; simply a stunner.
I spent my senior year with her from afar, and I saw her maybe once or twice a month. That was enough to do it I should think. I learned more about life that senior year with her, than I did in all my years of studying. I learned to think, to laugh, to love. You can’t get that from a textbook.
Humans aren’t binded by their genetic make-up or evolution or thumbs. We may all share 99% of the same DNA but that’s not what brings us together.
Cliche enough, it’s love.
Powerful in small spaces, yet with profound effect on distance. Love defies time, outliving both its source and its object. Love travels faster than light for light requires time to travel through space, but love reaches its object instantaneously.
She may be hundreds of miles away, but I swear I will love her the same way I always have: wholeheartedly.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that everyone gets their chance at love. It just depends on whether you see it when it presents yourself, and if you’ve got the courage to grab it. I say everyone has a chance because if a kid like me could find it, you’ve certainly got a future.
